I play in my church's praise band and would like recommendations on miking (sp) my amp. I am also looking at 2 different mics. 1st one is the Shure SM-57 and the other is by Shure also, but is their Performance Series, the PG-57, which is about 1/2 the cost of the SM-57. Only play once a week at church, don't gig out. Which way would you go? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Tommy...how about a used SM-57...should be in the same price range if a new one is twice as much as the PG-57.

I'm going to be in the same boat in a little while. This is a post I aired out a little while back...may have some suggestions....

Audio Technica dynamic mic's are also a good choice. The AKG C1000 condensor is also a good mic.

Tommy,

The SM-57 is the industry standard for micing amps on stage. Very reliable, not too pricey, and good sounding. New, a little over a hundred bucks. I sold a used one awhile back for $50.00. Check the Trading Post, I see them in there every so often.

I use this too. About $100. i love it. Much better clarity than a 57. Plus you do not need a Mic stand. Just hang it over the amp.

Please tell me more about the Sennheisser 609. What tones do you like? What styles do you play? What do you like about the mic? I'm looking for an alternative to my Beta 57.

Thanks!

I use a Dr Z Maz 38 1x12. I find this mic to be more transparent. I play clean Hollow T tones with some chorus to big box ES 165 Jazz to heavy rock solos from a Cobra Hollow S with M's though various Fulltone thingys.

Signal goes to an Allen and Heath 16x2 or 24x4 board, a bunch of Crown stuff to a bunch of JBL stuff. And I find the mic reporduces the signal a bit clearer. It alos sits square to the amp cover, (maybe that's why?) as I just drape it over the amp.

It is kind of hard to say, but it is just a bit cleaner sound.
