Cleaning rusting pole pieces?

The pole pieces on my H2+ and SA1's are showing a little rust on the top. I was going to dive in and figure out how to clean them, but I am sure there is some good advice to be had here. What is the best way to go about cleaning/de-rusting the pole pieces without damaging the surrounding bobbin material?

the danger is breaking through the nickel plating. i'd first scruff with some light oil and cloth. if that's not enough, some light scotch brite and oil is good, don't scrub too hard.
