Serial Number/Born On Date Question

Please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I realize that A=AM, N=Noon, and P=PM. However, I've seen some serial numbers/born on dates on this forum with dates ending in R as well as J. What do those mean?

Speaking for myself, many of my guitars have a "birthdate" and an "O" for my last name or another letter signifying the name of one of my kids. My guess would be that those letters correspond to the owners' first or last names.

yes, we'll do most anything with the last letter for a customer.

I have a Cobra S with my birthday and a D for my name. The TAG guys are really cool about that.
