View Full Version : Tele Neck Pickups (noiseless) which one?

Okay...
I'm toying with the idea of replacing the last pickup that hasn't been replaced in my Classic T, not because I don't like it (I LOVED it when it came with two single coils, I just like it better now...)
So...
I think I want to make it fully "noiseless".
That means that the TM2 in the bridge and the SF1 in the middle would stay (of course) and the TV in the neck would become...
...what...?
If I want zero hum but want to maintain as much of the tele neck pickup as I can (I don't mind if it's a little bright, I can back off the tone control when I use it alone)...
...which pickup in you guys' experience?
TF1? or TD1-?
I could leave it alone, too... but I really think I would like the whole guitar to be hum cancelling instead of 4 out of the 5 positions.
Maybe I should even add a push pull tone knob that will add the bridge so I can get all 3 or neck/bridge, too?
What would YOU do?
Here's the guitar.

I love the TF1/TF3 combo in my Classic T. This has been my first experience with a T style guitar so my experience is somewhat limited. I do, however, love it! It has become one of my main players. Great noiseless tones. Here is a clip I recorded with some higher gain tones. These pickups handled it very well. Let me know if you have any questions.

if it's always going to run humcncelling, TF1.

You are both super-helpful.
I also found a video online that appears to be that TF1 clean. Probably exactly what I'm looking for.
I really enjoyed the TF1/TF3 combo when I tried it out.
Oh and to add, I'd definitely want the neck/bridge combo sound. That is my favorite Tele tone.

Not sure I'd ever use it, though... And if I do want it, I probably want it on a toggle, not a push-pull, so it's easier to ignore.

I have that exact feature on mine. Pull the tone knob and I get the neck and bridge when the pickup selector is set on the neck.
with a 5 way i like to make the middle position be neck +bridge, as it is one of my fav sounds too. not much for middle alone.

I'd be all over that in a 3 pickup T. Or an S for that matter. I'm not much on the middle pickup either.

That is an awesome idea! probably pretty easy to do if you aren't doing any splits?

iirc, my switch is not a "super switch"... so... can this be done...? iirc, you indicated that a super-switch might not fit in this guitar actually.

I wish I had a traditional tele 2nd position but there are too many things I like about my HC1-/TM2 combo to ditch the HC for a single coil
you don't need the super switch, but you do need the oak switch that has 5 discrete positions. allparts calls it oak Grigsby 2 pole 5 way switch. you can assign any 2 pickups to any of the 5 positions. it's half of the Super switch and will fit anywhere the crl switch will fit.

This one?

Is it possible that's the one I got from you last year when I put the middle pickup in? I'm thinking it's not, so I need to get a new switch if I'm going to do this (which is totally cool...)
that's the one you need but we only use the 4 pole here. if you got a single size 5way from us it was probably the crl.

I am pretty sure I'll do this. I'm not going to "think about it" for a whole year like I did when I added the middle pickup.
So I'll order that from them.
Yer awesome. Go eat some turkey, man.

Everything is ordered and on the way.
Do ya have a wiring schematic handy?
Is this one right (in terms of the switch ONLY)?

Installed the pickup today with the regular switch (to see if I liked the possibility of having the center pickup by itself... new switch arrives today).
This is way better for me. The chime in the neck/middle is fantastic. better usability in all positions and the neck pickup is just what I wanted.
But...
The thought of replacing that center position with the neck/bridge has me salivating... so I'll report back when that is done. I will never use center only. Ever.
yes, there is magic to the regular old tele single coil sound this originally had, but this works SO much better for what I do week in and week out...

It is funny because I started messing with middle only on my S style guitars this year and have had some good results. With that said. I love that tele bridge/neck combo sound

I got inspired by a thread on a gear forum about the magic of the middle pickup and messed around a bit.
Naaah. Not for me...

I use it a fair bit after watching a Clapton video and seeing that he lives on the middle picky-up. 'Course he's using a lot of mid boost, too.

Lol I am note sure I find magic there especially when playing alone but in a mix I found some uses for it. That goes both for a middle single coil and my Tag classic that has an M in the middle. If I had a tele with a middle pickup I would have it wired the way you are about to do it with position 3 being bridge/ middle. I had an HSS short drop top mongrel (loved that thing) and on it I would split bridge pup select neck pick up and ouch pull to add bridge and I (Ruffly) had that tele position 2 sound. #goodtimes

Wired it up this morning (day off).
Why is it that I"ve been playing guitar for almost 40 years and have JUST heard of this nashville wiring scheme. I managed to once again do soldering without wrecking everything. HUGE win, there...
I've lamented the fact that my 3-pickup guitars have never given me 5 usable positions before. All that changed today.
The TF1 in the neck is simply gorgeous. The tele middle position makes this guitar way more useful than it was.
I doubt I'll be changing it again... Normally I never change so much as one pickup in a guitar, but this one I...
1. replaced the bridge with a TM2 shortly after I got it.
2. added the middle pickup. (SF1 I think, maybe an SF1R? I don't think so.)
3. replaced the neck with the TF1.
4. did the nashville wiring.
I guess I HAVE to play this guitar on Sunday now...

I don't know if that much...
funny thing. I love this guitar. It's easily my third favorite guitar I've ever owned. Trouble is, I currently own the ones I've loved best and second best, and they're basically tied, so my Crowdster and Atom live at work (church I play at) and the tele is the one I have at home. It means I do most of my recording with it, too.
But... in terms of electric guitars, nothing... nothing...nothing... has ever come close to this Atom CT. Just over 3 years owning it and I still delight when I open the case.
