View Full Version : Neck change ?
Hello guys,
I had a Anderson guitar Hollow Drop Top (04-14-02A) since a few months. I love this guitar, but I prefer the narrow and round neck
The specs of my neck :
(Nutwidth - 1 11/16 in/Back Shape - 020 inch undersized -- old neck size).
I'd like to know if s'il possible to order an equivalent neck at Anderson and for how much?
(Neck Finish - Matching Headstock, Satin Back
Nutwidth - 1 5/8 in
Frets - Heavy Stainless steel
Back Shape - roundback)
Thanks a lot.

Niko,
Unfortunately you can't retrofit a new neck with a 1 5/8" nut into an Anderson body originally built with a 1 11/16" nut. The neck pocket for a 1 11/16 nut neck is slightly larger than the pocket cut for a 1 5/8 nut neck. Going the opposite way is possible ( 1 5/8 to 1 11/16) but opening up the neck pocket.
Anderson typically charges about $500 plus shipping for a neck replacement. The original neck will not be returned to you to prevent un-authorized re-use on non-Anderson guitars.
Thanks a lot for your quick answer :)
Thus I will have to convince my wife that I must buy another Anderson guitar :D

Is that right?
I thought the neck pockets were all the same, and so were all of the neck heel dimensions. Maybe I'm assuming as such because of the old bolt-on/interchangeability approach.

The neck pocket for the 1 11/16 is about 1/32" larger than the 1 5/8 nut neck. I've had 2 Andersons changed from 1 5/8 -> 1 11/16 necks, both times Roy reiterated to me that the neck pocket would be enlarged.

Dave, I always did too...till I tried to switch my USA Strat neck with a Mexican one. Slightly off....:(

That's enlightening. Thanks for the info guys! :)

stan, te difference is really only .003" . we can go the other way, it's just a little trickier.

Niko,
Sorry for the incorrect info, it seems like TAG can change your neck from a 1 11/16 to a 1 5/8.
I guess you can't use this as an excuse to your wife to justify buying a new Anderson!!:D
Tom,
Sorry to give out incorrect info on the difference in neck pocket sizes. When I think about it it may have been Don Grosh who gave me the 1/32" neck pocket difference between 1 5/8 and 1 11/16 necks.
If the difference is only .003 then would build a neck to 1 11/16 specs and then sand the heel down to fit properly in the 1 5/8 pocket? I had ready somewhere that neck depths could be off by as much as .005 due to finish sanding. Just curious!

Niko,
Sorry, I can't be of help here, I've never played any Music Man Guitar. If you can get the dimensions of the neck depth at the 1st & 12 frets, the nut width and determine whether it is a V shape or a taper, then TAG can probably tell you if they have a neck that is close.
not a problem stan. lots of people are used to talking in fractions of inches. i just like decimals better. when we make a replacement neck, it is made for that particular guitar. that's why we want the whole guitar for the final fitting before finishing the neck.
